Bassistry - In Time

A classy, cross-pollinating jazz funk pop outfit, Bassistry most obviously recall vocal led bands like Incognito or Brand New Heavies. Yet the songs are a little grittier, and in these days of hackneyed formulaic, radio-ready music-for-the-masses, Bassistry (who met at a jam session in south London), offer a raw musicality that is refreshing. Led by bassist Marcel Pusey, the band is also powered by drummer Sam Blue (nicely up in the mix) and features classy trumpet solos from Duncan McKay. Song-writing wise a couple of numbers are so-so, yet 'It’s What I Give' (in which the group throw in a salsa twist); or the sun splashed 'Outta Style, In Time' both please. Meanwhile Katy Seath shines amid the jazzy arrangements of 'Served You Well' and on the gutsy opener 'Did You Miss Me?' As nice as In Time sounds, the record leaves one suspecting that it is live where Bassistry are at their best.
