Marcel Pusey

There are certain albums where I have to listen to the tracks back to back, for example: Dark Side of the Moon (Pink Floyd), In Rainbows (Radiohead) - to name but two. The fact that I was born prior to the i-tunes generation means that though I enjoy downloading individual tracks and combining favourite tracks I still enjoy the classic album thing. The artists wrote albums with a body of work in mind. Hence, I’ve tried to make sure the Try This EP is a combination of songs that work together.

Leave is inspired by a friend's relationship break up. He told me of the day they split. He arrived back at their pretty substantial, sumptuous new home to find that it had been cleared out. The only items left were his underpants and vest, left in the middle of the sitting room. As he told me this I could see the painful memory etched in his face but the thing was I found myself welling up with the need to laugh. He looked at me, noticing I was desperately holding back from losing it, and suddenly he started to laugh, we then both lost it and collapsed in hysterics. Luckily we're good enough mates to admire the amount of work his ex had gone into putting together such a vindictive act. The thing that stuck with me though was what he said about losing everything: "As long as I have my sanity, I don't care about all those things". He was miserable despite having loads of "things", it all meant nothing to him. So "Leave" is a fictional tale of being happy to lose all the material things and moving on with your sanity in tact - the tangible things didn’t matter anymore. Oh, apart from the Led Zepelin album - he loved the album, she didn't - she took it anyway. I guess that just shows that their relationship was doomed!

It's Only – This track means more to me than anything I’ve ever written. It's not the best track I've ever written, but it's the most personal. Have a look at Mark Welland’s beautiful animation on youtube

Try This – Is based on just 2 chords, I like the idea that you can weave melodies over such a basic idea. It's a little declaration about all the quality music that doesn't get exposure, and our obsession with celebrity. I'm not sure what a lot of people do, but they're in our faces day after day, that’s life I guess, but I choose not to buy into all that and I’m quite happy not to.

Hope you like the tunes. Let me know your thoughts on myspace

Cheers,

Marcel
